King's Initiatives Suvarnabhumi

Full support on the Royal Project to prevent flooding in Greater Bangkok

His Majesty the King was greatly concerned with flooding in Greater Bangkok. On 17 November 1998, His Majesty the King assigned the Supreme Commander to prevent flooding in Greater Bangkok, particularly within the construction site of Suvarnabhumi Airport. The Supreme Command Headquarters therefore undertook the initiatives of his Majesty the King to implement the royal project under the title: “Royal Project to Prevent Flooding in Greater Bangkok”.

As a government agency and having an airport site within the affected area of flooding, NBIA joined hands with the Thai Armed Forces to fully support the royal project with a budget of 54 million baht. In this cooperative effort, NBIA and the Thai Armed Forces signed an agreement on 21 December 1998 to dredge and expand several canals and, as well as, removing weeds in and around the vicinity of the airport. This was to mitigate flooding and expedite the drainage from the north to the south and towards the sea.

Other works have also been carried out in the following years, as follows:
  •  Between 1998 and 1999, a total length of 84.55 km. of the canals vis-?-vis Nong Ngu Hao, Lad Krabang, Dheva Trong, Bang Kwang and their tributaries were dredged and expanded along with removal of weeds. The total volume of excavated soil was approximately 682,624 cubic metres;
  •  In 2000, a total length of 77 km. and an approximate volume of 384,042 cubic metres of excavated soil from 15 canals in the south of Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bang Pli, Bang Pla Ra, Sib, Kao, etc.) were dredged; and
  •  In the 2001-2002 period, the canals, Klong Neung, Sib and Sib-Ed in the south of the airport saw a total volume of approximately 74,971 cubic metres over 7.97 km long were dredged and expanded.
  • In addition, over 6.5 km. of the weeds in the canals along and within the airport site were also removed.

Since the beginning of the Royal Project to Prevent Flooding in Greater Bangkok, NBIA and the Thai Armed Forces had carried out the works of dredging and expanding of a total of 24 canals including the removal of weeds in the canals surrounding the airport site, as follows:

  •  169.52 km. long
  •  1,141,637 cubic metres of excavated soil
  •  Expenditure - 43.346 million baht
